Description

For various reasons, BCS always needs to hire some new teachers at the beginning of the School Year and occasionally at some other time during the Year. When a candidate is found, the Dean may talk to him/her to pre-screen the candidate. If it seems a good match, then the Dean or HR Rep can send him/her a BCS application form and schedule an interview. The interviewer includes Dean, HR Rep, VP-Instruction and the Principal. BCS's Teacher Interview Guideline should be followed.

A certain number of substitutes should also be established.

Locating and employing good and experienced teachers is a challenge. Usually there are five ways to look for a teacher:

1. Advertise in local Chinese newspapers, e.g., World Journal, and Sing Tao News.

This was a more productive approach several years ago. The ad better be put on the news in the early summer --- when other Chinese schools have not started looking for teachers.

2. By word of mouth, i.e., introduced by other BCS teachers or parents. Usually this approach can find a good teacher.

3. Persuading some parents to become teachers. When a Dean or some BCS Board member spot a promising teacher, it will take some time to persuade him/her to become a teacher.

4. Ask for recommendation from other Chinese schools' administrators. Since some Chinese schools' classes are not on Saturday morning, their administrators may offer help.

5. Hold an Open House on one school day. This was done once a few years ago with less satisfactory results.

Looking for good teachers should be a year around work, not when there are vacancies. The easiest way to improve the student's academic performance is to hire a good teacher. With so many Chinese schools in the Bay Area to share the same teacher's pool, locating qualified teachers needs to be a conscientious and all-year-round work.
