Introduce Point System, Newsletter Sep 25, 1999

There is parents' meeting at each campus today. The purpose of this meeting is to listen to parents' opinion and suggestion to the school and to communicate about the Point System issue.

In the past year, the Board held many meetings and made lots of discussion about the Point System and considered the impact to school parents. One of the most concerned issues is how we can continue to promote the volunteerism among our parents. Without these volunteers, it's not possible to operation this school as is. It's impossible to run this school with just 2 points' worth of work from each student and it's obvious impossible for school to exist if everyone choose to pay fee rather than work for school.

People ask: Why BCS needs the Point System after 19 years? My answer is this is a reflection of reality. As BCS grew in past years, the administrative work increased substantially. However, the amount of volunteers did not grow proportionally. Often the school Board members struggle to find enough people to volunteer and even wasting time just for soliciting help without successful effort. If we let this scenario to continue, the operation of BCS may be halted suddenly someday. We do not want such a day to come.

The Point System will provide clear means for parents to help and resulting better efficiency. It also help resolve some parents' system "We want to help but we don't know where, when and how to help?" On the other hand, it requires all school administrators to provide better planning on all tasks in order to let parents sign up jobs easily. However, these planning efforts can also served as future reference for new Board members. With cumulative efforts, this school can have better and more precise planning. And it can encourage new parents to volunteer as Board members since many tasks planning are getting easier. Parents should not hesitate again due to concern of complexity of school tasks.

Every year, there are parents and students join and leave BCS. However, the school operation must not stop. And new comers must be able to continue this operation. I hope the Point System can provide this infrastructure to ease the continuity of school operation. Someday, if we have enough volunteers to help all tasks, then we can stop counting the points and let the volunteerism spirit thrive again.
