Good Neighbor Recognition Award

The Mayor of San Jose Ron Gonzales presented the Good Neighbor Recognition Award to Berryessa Chinese School during the annual State of the City Address. The ceremony took place in the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose on April 28, 1999.

Berryessa Chinese School was honored for the dedication in preserving Chinese languages and cultures. The School was praised for "serving a critical role in promoting cultural awareness, enhancing overall education of our young people, and making the City of San Jose and the entire Silicon Valley region a place where we celebrate the contributions of our diverse population."

The award was nominated by Margie Matthews, San Jose District 4 City Councilmember who brought the good news and presented the plaque to the Chinese School during the Board meeting. In the acceptance speech, Principal Kevin Chan stated that " ... this was our first formal recognition by the City of San Jose to the Chinese School. We are very proud of this award and in particular proud to be a good citizen in the community ... we are sharing this pride with all our volunteers, teachers, parents and students of the School. Thank you Team for doing a wonderful job!! ...".
