Taiwan Earthquake Fund Drive

On September 20th, 1999, a powerful earthquake 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Taiwan, killing thousands of people and wounding many times more. Thousands and thousands of people were left homeless.

Albert Ko, Advisor to Berryessa Chinese School immediately initiated a fund drive. With the approval from the Board, he mobilized teachers, parents and Board members and within the first week received as much as $8,000 of donation. Throughout the program, a total of $23,000 was collected and was quickly wired to Taiwan through international disaster relief agencies.

What made this fund drive different than others was that the disaster epicenter was located in a cultural area our students were very familiar with. Many of them were either born in Taiwan or had visited their relatives there. A lot of donations came from the students themselves. They donated pennies, nickles, dimes and what they had from their piggy banks to show that they care. The adults put in hundreds of dollars and prayed that their relatives had survived the quake.

Berryessa Chinese School would like to thank those
who offered help to the earthquake victims in Taiwan.

Thank you very much for your support.
