Academic Competition

Started in 1982, Bay Area Chinese School Association, now Association of Northern California Chinese Schools (ANCCS), began an informal academic and cultural program among the area Chinese schools. Berryessa Chinese School (BCS) began to have our own academic competition program to select students to participate. It was first organized among the teachers. Poem Recitation was one of the programs selected. It was not quite popular then and it was not very organized either. Not until 1988, Ron Poon, Vice Principal of BCS started to formalize the academic competition with separate Cantonese and Mandarin programs.

Owing to increased number of programs and participants, in 1989 Fook Wong reorganized and combined the Cantonese and Mandarin programs to facilitate the Academic Competition. With the help from teachers and parents, rules and program regulations started to shape into form according to the ANCCS guidelines. Diversified programs began so that BCS has a better selection process to participate in the ANCCS annual Academic Competition.

Since then, BCS has been the school to beat in the annual ANCCS Academic Competition. For the past few years, Margaret Cheng took on herself to conduct the program. BCS has been the front runners of winning various categories and BCS is still the school to beat.

Here are some of the pictures for this year's winners. We would like to thank all the teachers and parents especially Grace and Margaret for their help to make the Academic Competition a success.
