Paradise in the South China Sea

I flew over an atoll in the South China Sea at 40,000 feet and took this photo. The atoll was located at about 180 miles southeast of Hainan 海南島 in the 西沙群岛 Paracel Island chain.

The first sight of this geographical wonder was awesome and mesmerizing. It was just incredible and indescribable with color ranging from bright green to dark blue. All was very peaceful and quiet at my elevation. It could have been a perfect place for swimming or sun tanning of a lifetime down there .... as long as there was no tsunami rolling in or sharks circling around me :-)

An atoll was an island of coral that encircled a lagoon either partially or completely. It took many thousands of years to form and the living island would continue to transform.

Here is a Google Map displaying the general location based on GPS reading I captured in flight. Use the GoogleMap to zoom down and move to the right to see other atolls in the South China Sea.
