It has been said that Berryessa Chinese School (BCS) is the 14th school in the
Berryessa Union School District
(BUSD). This is not an exaggeration due to the fact that more than half of
BCS students come from the area and BCS uses the District's three middle school
facilities on 30 Saturdays of the year.
Berryessa Union School District Office on Piedmont Road BCS has been enjoying a cordial relationship with BUSD for the past 20 years. Both organizations share a common goal - education. This close tie was further enhanced under the administrations of then Superintendent Biefke Vos Saulino, Superintendent Herb Wadley and Interim Superintendent Pat Stelwagon. Since BCS is a community school run by volunteers, partnership with the parents is of paramount importance. This vision is shared by both organizations to motivate parents to involve in the schools. In 1975 when the first tract home was built on Berryessa Road adjacent to the Flea Market, a surge of Chinese population from the high tech industry moved into Berryessa replacing the field once populated with flower plantation. Berryessa has since become the bedroom community of the Silicon Valley and is a magnet for Asian populations in the Valley. A 1984 study done by the School District showed that Asian/Pacific Islander population accounted for 18% of the district's 8000+ students. By 1987, the proportion went up to 25% and by year end 1999 Asian/Pacific Islander accounted for 42.6% of the Berryessa population. Berryessa Chinese School was already well established and therefore positioned quite well in serving the community's Asian population. BCS also stands out as a model and a platform for other diversity groups to build their own cultural programs. In 1995, a sister school Milpitas Community Chinese School was established to serve the high concentration of Chinese population in the Milpitas community. |
